Back where I belong

Yesterday I took my first dip into the ocean again after a long time. Too long for my aching limbs. On land my heavy legs walked through the atmosphere as though I waded through wet cement; my bones dry and brittle, creaking with every step, longed to be soaked in the salty sea, to absorb the sea minerals; my straw hair dissolved into silky seaweed, my limbs elongated underwater, stretching, twisting, transforming….I felt free. I felt like me.

I wade into the water

each wave pulls me in deeper and deeper

my feet dissolve

my muscles melt

my body lets go

I surrender to the sea

flesh falls away

scales replace skin

luminescent limbs float away

leaving only the breath

ebbing and flowing

bubbles and seafoam
